“Accessibility Mystery Shopping Gave Me My Independence Back”

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

We reached out to Gemma, who was happy to share her story and explain how accessibility mystery shopping helped her regain independence and confidence after shielding.

Her experience shows just how empowering these assignments can be-not just for improving accessibility in public spaces, but for enabling truly inclusive experiences, both for the shoppers themselves and the customers they represent.

Read on to find out how mystery shopping helped Gemma reconnect with the world-and how you can get involved too.

“Before 2020, I was a very independent and outgoing person.

But shielding during the pandemic changed all of that. I became scared to leave the house and relied heavily on my husband for everything-from the weekly food shop to returning clothes bought online. The thought of going out alone became overwhelming.

That’s when a good friend suggested mystery shopping.

At first, I wasn’t sure. But the idea of being paid to get out and about, with a clear goal and purpose, gave me something to work toward. I started slowly-just dipping my toe in the water. I tried the varied assignments that Mystery Shoppers Ltd had to offer, I then took on a train accessibility assignment.

As someone who’s visually impaired and uses a guide dog, it wasn’t easy. The idea of navigating a train station alone again was daunting. But the team at MSL (especially Anna) supported me every step of the way. That first train trip left me shaking-but also glowing. I had done it. I had taken a step towards feeling like me again.

Soon, one assignment became two. Then three. I built up confidence and started exploring new routes. I began with shorter, local routes and gradually built up to longer-distance journeys connecting major cities, all across the UK!

Eventually, thanks to my consistent feedback and dedication, I was asked to pilot a new assignment for one of their newest clients. I even turned it into a date day with my husband-he just had to travel in a separate carriage!

Since then, I’ve woven accessibility assignments into my everyday life. If I’m heading to Cardiff to watch the rugby, I’ll check if there’s a mystery shop available. I even tackled a multi-change journey to a station near Bath Spa recently-something I wouldn’t have dreamed of doing a few years ago-all to collect a car part for my daughter.

That trip meant her car was fixed in time for her driving test. It felt like a full-circle moment: mystery shopping helped me regain my confidence, and that confidence helped me support my family in return.”
